Not long after announcing, “We're not going to grow the console market with $1000 consoles,” on his X account, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has unveiled the company’s thousand-dollar handheld consoles.
As ironic as it sounds, the reality speaks otherwise. Despite backlash from the community, everyone is rushing to get their hands on ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally handheld gaming consoles as retailers struggle to keep the products in stock!
The ROG Xbox Ally release date and the ROG Xbox Ally X release date both fall on the same date: October 16, 2025. Pre-orders are currently live in select regions:
Also launching on October 16 in these additional regions:
The ROG Xbox Ally is priced at USD $599.99 (≈ £499 / €599) while the high-end ROG Xbox Ally X price carries a premium tag of USD $999.99 (≈ £799 / €899)
The ROG Xbox Ally is the entry point into Microsoft and ASUS’s ambitious handheld venture, designed for gamers who want a premium on-the-go experience without going all the way to the ultra-high-end.
At its heart lies the AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, which is built on Zen 4 architecture with 4 CPU cores and 8 threads. It is further supported by 8 RDNA 2 GPU cores. While this makes ROG Xbox Ally the lighter sibling compared to the Ally X, the performance is still more than enough to deliver smooth gaming at 1080p. This puts it on par with popular handheld rivals like the Steam Deck OLED.
In addition, ROG Xbox Ally comes paired with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB SSD storage. It boasts a 7-inch FHD IPS display, covered with durable Gorilla Glass Victus for added protection, and features a 120Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync Premium.
The controller design takes cues from the Xbox Wireless Controller. In that, it features contoured grips, Hall Effect triggers, ABXY bumpers, remappable back buttons, and motion controls. Xbox players would know what I’m talking about.
At just 670g, ROG Xbox Ally remains lightweight, and the 80Wh battery promises solid playtime, with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity ensuring seamless online play.
If the base model impressed you, the ROG Xbox Ally X takes things up to the next level!
This flagship handheld packs the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, which is built on Zen 5 architecture featuring 8 cores and 16 threads, alongside 16 RDNA 3.5 GPU cores. Paired with 24GB of ultra-fast LPDDR5X-8000 RAM and a roomy 1TB SSD, it’s a powerhouse designed for those who want uncompromised performance across AAA titles, Game Pass, and even cloud streaming.
Much like its sibling, the ROG Xbox Ally X uses the crisp 7-inch FHD IPS panel with 120Hz refresh rate, but the subtle refinements make a big difference. In that, the Impulse Triggers, lifted straight from the Xbox Series controllers, offer immersive feedback, while the inclusion of both USB4 Type-C and USB 3.2 Type-C ports boosts connectivity options.
Unlike the standard Ally, its microSD reader supports both UHS-I and UHS-II cards. Weighing slightly more at 715g, the ROG Xbox Ally X still carries the same 80Wh battery but with improved power management, which helps ensure longer sessions despite the performance bump.
In short, for those who crave the ultimate handheld gaming machine, the ROG Xbox Ally X is clearly the crown jewel of the lineup.
