Minecraft The Sift Explained: Release Date, Platforms and Confirmed Features
The Sift is Minecraft’s newly announced fourth dimension. Here is what Mojang has confirmed for Java and Bedrock, and what remains speculation.

Minecraft The Sift Explained: Release Date, Platforms and Confirmed Features
The Sift is an officially announced fourth dimension coming to Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in 2027. Mojang has not announced an exact release date, portal recipe or complete feature list.
A version of The Sift is already playable in Minecraft Dungeons II, but players cannot currently enter the dimension in normal vanilla Minecraft. Mods claiming to add it are community interpretations rather than Mojang’s official update.
What is The Sift in Minecraft?
The Sift is a colorful new dimension joining the Overworld, Nether and End. Mojang revealed it during Minecraft LIVE in September 2026 and described it as the first new Minecraft dimension in more than fourteen years.
The short vanilla preview showed a bright, unfamiliar world and one of its inhabitants. Mojang has deliberately kept most of the dimension’s mechanics, resources and progression secret.
The official Minecraft LIVE recap confirms that The Sift will come to both Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027.
Minecraft The Sift release date

Mojang has only announced a 2027 release window. There is no confirmed month or launch day.
| Question | Confirmed answer |
|---|---|
| Is The Sift official? | Yes |
| Is it a new dimension? | Yes |
| Is it coming to Java Edition? | Yes |
| Is it coming to Bedrock Edition? | Yes |
| Is the exact release date known? | No |
| Is a vanilla portal recipe known? | No |
| Can it be explored in Dungeons II? | Yes |
Any website or video claiming to know the exact vanilla release date should therefore be treated cautiously unless it links to a newer Mojang announcement.
Can you enter The Sift in Minecraft right now?
No. As of October 22, 2026, The Sift is not available in a public vanilla Java or Bedrock release.
Community mods and add-ons already use the name, but these projects are not previews of Mojang’s finished dimension. Their portals, mobs and recipes should not be presented as official features.
In particular, Mojang has not confirmed that an Ancient City frame, music disc, goat horn or conventional obsidian portal will open The Sift. These ideas currently belong to community theories or mods.
The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons II
The situation is different in Minecraft Dungeons II, which launched on September 29, 2026. Its story allows players to travel through rifts into a Dungeons-specific version of The Sift.

Mojang describes this version as a strange dimension filled with new threats, landscapes and mysteries. The Dungeons II presentation includes areas such as the Meadow and Carapace, while the game’s interconnected world replaces the strictly separated mission structure of the original Minecraft Dungeons.
The official Dungeons II information page confirms that players can already explore The Sift in that game.
That does not mean every Dungeons II enemy, item or location will appear unchanged in vanilla Minecraft. Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons II use different combat, progression and world systems.
What features has Mojang confirmed?
Mojang has confirmed only a limited foundation for the vanilla version:
- The Sift is Minecraft’s fourth major dimension.
- It is planned for 2027.
- It will come to Java and Bedrock Edition.
- The preview shows a colorful environment and at least one inhabitant.
- It shares its core concept with the dimension introduced in Dungeons II.
The complete mob roster, biomes, blocks, structures, resources, portal system and progression requirements remain unconfirmed.

The Blub is an officially named companion in Minecraft Dungeons II, including as a pet in its Deluxe Edition. Mojang has not yet fully explained how any similar creature will function in the vanilla dimension.
Why The Sift matters more than another biome
Our view is that The Sift will succeed or fail based on its gameplay purpose, not simply its pink and turquoise appearance.
A new dimension needs reasons to return after the first expedition. The Nether provides brewing ingredients, blaze rods and netherite progression. The End contains the dragon, elytra and shulker boxes. The Sift will need its own useful resources, traversal systems or long-term challenges.
The announcement is nevertheless significant. Minecraft has added many biomes and structures over the years, but introducing a complete dimension gives Mojang space to change world generation, survival rules and progression more fundamentally.
How should players prepare?
There is no special item you need to collect yet. For now:
- Do not rebuild Ancient City structures based on unconfirmed portal tutorials.
- Do not pay for a mod because it claims to provide official early access.
- Back up important worlds before future snapshots or previews.
- Expect experimental Java snapshots or Bedrock previews before the final release.
- Check the official Minecraft changelog when testing begins.

Our early verdict on The Sift
The Sift is Minecraft’s most important world-expansion announcement in years, but Mojang has intentionally shown too little for a final judgement.
The art direction immediately distinguishes it from the Nether and End. The larger question is whether its resources and mechanics will meaningfully connect to existing survival worlds. Until Mojang reveals that loop, excitement is justified, but detailed portal recipes and complete feature lists are speculation.
